Celtic let Andrew Robertson go when he was in the club’s under-15s – but he’s gone from strength to strength ever since.
Andrew Robertson might have thought he was signing for Liverpool this summer to be the left-back the club were crying out for.
It is unlikely the Scotland international would have expected to find himself behind Alberto Moreno in the pecking order, then, after the Spaniard started just two Premier League games last season and lost his place to converted midfielder James Milner.
Nonetheless, Robertson still looks an excellent signing for an initial £8 million from relegated Hull City, per the BBC. Though he could have been plying his trade for another of Britain’s biggest clubs, Scottish champions Celtic, if he hadn’t been released for that time-honoured reason – he was ‘too small’.
“For (the dream) to come to an end, it’s hard, and everyone you know knows you play for Celtic – telling them you’ve been released is not a nice feeling,” Robertson, a boyhood Celtic fan, told the Liverpool official website.
“The amount of boys it happens to up and down the country is incredible, as is the amount of people that don’t come back from it because it just hits them that hard.
“I know boys that got released when we were younger and they’re nowhere to be seen and that happens with probably 95 per cent of the boys that do.”
There is not a club on planet earth who have not cast off a talented youngster only to see him develop into a top class senior pro. However, with Robertson earning an £8 million move to Liverpool and starring for Scotland, perhaps Celtic should have placed technique above stature.
Thankfully, they put a little more faith in Kieran Tierney.
