Liverpool rebuffing Sunderland’s Ryan Kent interest could be an inspired decision

Sunderland wanted to sign Ryan Kent on loan from Liverpool but Jurgen Klopp’s side sent him to Bundesliga challengers Freiburg instead.

Ryan Kent joining Freiburg on loan from Liverpool was certainly one of the most left-field transfers that took place on deadline day.

The 20-year-old winger is highly-rated at Anfield and Jurgen Klopp wanted to give him a chance in pre-season to prove his worth before making a decision on his future with no shortage of clubs hoping to sign Kent on a permanent basis.

However, after star turns against both Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in the Audi Cup, Liverpool decided that Kent would be better off honing his qualities elsewhere – at Freiburg no less.

Yet, it is becoming increasingly clear why Kent, who spent last season at Barnsley in the Championship, headed to Christian Streich’s side.

“The intensity in Freiburg is very high. Here, everyone is already 100 percent in the training and in the game you get a good feeling,” Kent told the club’s official website, drawing comparisons between the style of Freiburg and his parent club.

“Freiburg and Liverpool are not so dissimilar, I think. Perhaps that is also because the LFC with Jürgen Klopp is a German coach.”

Getting to know the German style

Suddenly, the decision to loan Kent to the Bundesliga club, rather than interested suitors Sunderland, per the Liverpool Echo, appears to make perfect sense.

The Black Cats are desperately in need of added creativity in attack and Kent could therefore have benefitted from a club who rely on him to make a difference in games. However, they are currently entrenched in the Championship relegation zone and, after a 5-2 battering at Ipswich Town in midweek, the atmosphere on Wearside threatens to turn toxic.

Not the ideal environment, then, for a young player looking to make his mark in the senior game.

Freiburg, however, will allow Kent the opportunity to get used to a typical German style of football and ready him for the tactical demands of Klopp next season.
