Leeds United want to rescue Danny Ings from Liverpool in January but surely Jurgen Klopp should give the striker a chance at Anfield.
Danny Ings has not played a league game for Liverpool since a 1-1 home draw with West Brom in May 2016. Suffering two serious knee injuries since joining from Burnley two years ago, the striker appeared to have the world at his feet back then but is now merely looking to re-establish himself as a professional footballer.
And a loan spell at Leeds United could be exactly what he needs. According to ESPN, Leeds believe that the 25-year-old could be crucial to their promotion prospects and Ings certainly has an impressive track record in the second tier.
Ings scored 21 goals in 40 games for Burnley during the 2013/14 season, helping them finish second in the Championship and earn promotion to the Premier League. Leeds, whose excellent start to the season has been undermined by a run of three defeats in four, have Pierre-Michel Lasogga and the currently crocked Caleb Ekuban as their only senior centre-forwards so Ings could provide a quality and experienced alternative.
You wonder whether Liverpool may be acting a little hastily, however, if they gift-wrap Ings and sent him to Elland Road in January. After all, their recent lack of goals is well established with Jurgen Klopp’s side scoring just seven goals from their last 126 shots.
Daniel Sturridge, who struggled badly in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday, looks a shadow of his former self while Roberto Firmino’s form has also dropped in recent weeks.
Therefore, a sharp and instinctive centre-forward like Ings could be exactly what Klopp is looking for. Sending him to Leeds in January without giving him a chance in the Liverpool first-team seems a little counter-productive.
