Liverpool fans weren’t too happy when Mario Gotze’s move from Dortmund fell through this summer but – thanks to Sadio Mane – he’s all forgotten now.

Borussia Dortmund, with one of the most traditional, passionate fanbases in European football, could hardly be more different to the faceless, energy-drink sponsored newcomers from the north. However, Saturday’s 1-0 defeat means Dortmund’s tifo-swaying ultras have even more reason to despise Red Bull Leipzig. Or, as they’ve come to be known, the most hated club in Germany.
But it’s fair to say Liverpool fans don’t share Dortmund’s pain. After all, the news that Mario Gotze’s second Dortmund debut had ended in defeat would hardly have elicited much sympathy on Anfield after the World Cup winner backed out of a move to Merseyside this summer – especially with Sadio Mane maintaining a surprisingly superb start to his Anfield career by starring, and scoring, in Liverpool’s 4-1 thrashing of the champions on the same afternoon.
Liverpool’s £34 million winger is suddenly making all the anger that followed the Gotze saga seem rather futile. And, if you feel you can detect the odd boast among Liverpool’s ever-Tweeting legion, that’s because you can.

Mane > Gotze. Worth every single last penny that we paid for him….oh, and he’s only 24 years old. Perfect player for this club.

Remember when we all kicked off because we failed to sign Gotze. So glad we didn’t now, Mane is the man

Mane is the truth! Always looking to enter the box to create or score. Can’t believe we were obsessed with Gotze for 3 months.

Mario Gotze not wanting to join Liverpool turned out to be a blessing in disguise. #Mane

I know he hasn’t played in awhile, but if Gotze has 2-3 more games like this, the Chinese League scouts are going to start showing up. #BVB

@KrazeyMatt Gotze is a great player but Mane fits this team so much better. Class above.

Chin up Mario. It’s not all bad…
#BVB positives. Dembele’s energy. Same for Raphael. Gotze looked good imo. Will be nice to see play when offense is in sync.
