Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson impressed in England’s 2-0 win against Costa Rica but should he start ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier?

Gareth Southgate has certainly sparked a national debate – Jordan Henderson or Eric Dier.
And, if you lined up every single England fanatic in the country and asked their opinion, no doubt you would get very near to a 50-50 split. Henderson versus Dier might be a world away from the Gerrard versus Lampard debate of yesteryear but there is no doubting their immense importance to the England side.

Whoever Southgate picks will be entrusted to control the tempo and the play from the centre of the park, win back possession and start attacks from deep. And, in the eyes of Liverpool fans, Henderson proved in midweek that he should get the nod ahead of his Tottenham Hotspur counterpart.
The former Sunderland man has had a terrific season, putting those injury issues behind him to captain Liverpool to the Champions League final while producing some fine displays against Manchester City and Roma along the way.
And, while Marcus Rashford might hog the headlines for his stunning goal in the 2-0 win against Costa Rica, Henderson produced a dominant performance in the centre of the park that only strengthened the argument that he, rather than Dier, should be England’s go-to man.
