Scottish Premiership giants Rangers are set to pull off the surprise signing of former Manchester United youngster Sean Goss from Championship side QPR.
Well this deal came completely out of the blue. According to the BBC, Sean Goss is set to go from Rangers to Rangers with the QPR midfielder closing in on a loan move to Ibrox.
It is understood that the 22-year-old, who has made just six Championship appearances for Ian Holloway’s side, is already undergoing a medical with the Scottish giants and he could become the club’s first signing since Graeme Murty was appointed full-time manager.
Now, the fact that Goss simply did not make the grade at QPR may be a cause for concern among Rangers supporters. The youngster has not even played a single minute of first-team football so far in 2017/18.
But if Rangers can help the one-time Manchester United prospect belatedly realise his vast potential, they will have a real talent on their hands. And when you watch Goss play, spraying passes across the field and controlling the midfield with real class, it is clear just how much he has learned from watching Michael Carrick dominate the centre of the park at Old Trafford.
“He is one of my favourite players and I do look up to him. I want to play like him as well, spreading passes,” Goss told United’s official website in 2015.
It seems unlikely now that Goss, who never made a first-team appearance for United, will ever live up to the legacy of Carrick. United’s number 16 is one of the most decorated Englishman of his generation after all, with five Premier League titles and a Champions League winners’ medal headlining his CV.
But Goss’s superb range of passing and metronomic distribution could offer a real touch of class to Rangers’ workmanlike midfield. Perhaps a prolonged run of first-team football at Ibrox will offer a timely reminder of Goss’s undoubted talents.
