Liam Kelly and Craig Halkett both failed to make a single appearance for Scottish Premiership giants Rangers before joining Livingston.
Rangers battered Motherwell 7-1 in the final game before the international break but Steven Gerrard should not expect this Saturday’s opponents to be quite so accommodating.
Livingston have been solid, committed and tough to break down since returning to the top flight this season. In fact, only Celtic have conceded fewer than their seven Scottish Premiership goals with one-goal victories and pinpoint set-pieces summing up their campaign thus far.
So Rangers face a tough challenge breaking down this Livi side – especially with two former Ibrox youngsters desperate to make an impression against their former club.
According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers were hoping to keep Liam Kelly in Glasgow before relenting and letting the 22-year-old goalkeeper join newly promoted Livingston on a two-year deal.
Craig Halkett, meanwhile, did not make a single first team appearance for the Gers before he was released in January 2016, moving to the Almondvale Stadium shortly afterwards. Like Kelly, the 23-year-old is showing his former employers what they’re missing these days and has arguably been the best centre-back anywhere in Scotland’s top flight since August.
But with Rangers looking for a new centre-back in January, according to The Express, and with regular number one Allan McGregor 36 years of age, Gerrard’s side should use this opportunity to watch both Kelly and Halkett very closely.
If they stand out against Rangers at Ibrox, don’t rule out the Glasgow giants offering them a second chance.
