Could Lewis Macleod be on his way back to the Scottish Premiership with Rangers after almost four years in the Championship with Brentford?

Lewis Macleod was left hugely disappointed by Rangers’ decision to sell him in January 2015.

The Ibrox academy graduate blossomed into a first-team player during The Gers’ rise through the lower leagues after their 2012 demotion. But, just a year before the Glasgow giants sealed their long-awaited return to the top flight, Macleod was sold to Brentford for an initial £850,000 fee.

Almost four years on, however, reports are suggesting that the 24-year-old could be set for a shock return to the club where he made his name.

Macleod is out of contract at the end of this season and, according to the Scottish Sun, he has rejected Brentford’s latest offer of an extension. The report adds that Rangers could now be tempted to offer the gifted midfielder a second chance to prove himself at Ibrox.

Suddenly, the comments Macleod made after he departed in 2015 look particularly interesting.

“When you’re a Rangers fan, it’s hard to let go and I’ve never experienced anything else in football up to now,” the then-20-year-old told The Mail.

“I’d love to go back to Rangers later in my career. The most disappointing thing about leaving is the way I went. I’ve been injured so I wasn’t able to play my last game knowing that would be the case and say goodbye to the fans.”

Macleod has put his injury problems behind him to establish himself as a regular starter in Brentford’s midfield this season, featuring in the XI on 10 occasions in the Championship throughout 2018/19.

But Rangers aren’t exactly short of central midfielders so there may be other areas that they’d be better off strengthening.
