Andy King left 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City to sign for Championship play-off hopefuls Derby County in the January transfer window.
Andy King has indicated that he could stay at Derby County if Frank Lampard’s side are promoted to the Premier League this season, speaking to Derbyshire Live.
The 30-year-old midfielder arrived at Pride Park on the final day of the January transfer window, joining on loan from Leicester City while turning down a move to Derby’s East Midland neighbours Nottingham Forest.
King has made two Championship appearances so far for the Rams, starting the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town a week ago, and his experience could be crucial in a hectic run-in.
While admitting that his long-term future is up in the air, the Wales international has suggested that he could be willing to sign a permanent deal with Derby if they enjoy a successful end to the season.
“That is down to me to see how well I can do between now and the end of the season,” King said when asked if he could stay at Pride Park.
“We don’t know what is going to happen here between now and the end of the season in terms of performances and where Derby finish, and things like that.
“You always want to play at the highest level you can. For me, that is obviously playing in the Premier League. Whether that can be with Derby, hopefully if the end of the season goes well, then why not.”
King won the Championship title with Leicester during the 2013/14 season, meaning he knows exactly what it takes to succeed at this level.
As it stands, however, Derby have dropped out of the play-off places after a difficult run of form after Christmas, sitting two points adrift of Bristol City in seventh.
