Leeds United’s reported interest in Angus Gunn raises plenty of questions

Leeds United need a new goalkeeper at Elland Road but should they really go for Angus Gunn, who played in the Championship with Norwich last season?

The fact that Bailey Peacock-Farrell was thrown in at the deep end in the final three months of last season is a reflection on just how poor Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan were between the sticks for Leeds United.

Wiedwald (below), a German keeper brought in from Werder Bremen last summer, made a whole host of costly errors while the experienced Lonergan, in his second spell at Elland Road, hardly looked a safer pair of hands when being brought in with a dreadful mistake against Brentford sticking in the mind.

So it was no surprise when the Yorkshire Evening Post reported that Leeds were looking at bringing in a new goalkeeper this summer with experience seemingly an attribute they were looking out for, reflected by the links with proven Championship stopper Keiren Westwood.

Reports from the YEP stating that Leeds are now in the mix to sign Angus Gunn on loan from Manchester City, however, will raise a few questions.

Gunn spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Norwich City and, while getting some much needed first-team experience under his belt and even earning a call-up for England, it was a mixed season with some impressive displays interspersed with naïve errors.

Gunn is just 22 years of age, nine months older than Peacock-Farrell, so would not give Leeds the leadership or experience they have been lacking at the back in recent months.

Leeds simply must get it right this summer but Gunn feels like a risk – especially when there are older, more battle-hardened options available.
