Felix Wiedwald was a busy man on Saturday as Leeds United went down 1-0 to Millwall in the Championship.

Felix Wiedwald had kept six clean sheets in a row prior to Leeds United’s trip to Millwall on Saturday.
However, that impressive statistic owed more to the impressive performances of the club’s centre-halves, rather than any virtuoso displays from the former Werder Bremen goalkeeper. You could count the amount of saves Wiedwald had made in his first few games in English football on two hands, after all.
However, despite Leeds’ unbeaten start to the season ending at The Den as Aiden O’Brien’s second-half strike secured a 1-0 win, Wiedwald at least seized the chance to silence any lingering doubters.

For the first time, the 27-year-old found himself tested against a Millwall side who outplayed Thomas Christiansen’s visitors and wholly deserved their hard-earned victory.
Wiedwald made six impressive saves and was undoubtedly the stand-out player of an admittedly below-par Leeds side. In fact, without the German ‘keeper performing heroics between the sticks, Leeds could have been on the end of a humiliating result rather than a merely disappointing 1-0 loss.

Wiedwald arrived in English football amid plenty of scrutiny after conceding 13 goals in his final three Bundesliga games for Bremen. It didn’t help that he was tasked with replacing the popular Rob Green, who had enjoyed an excellent few months in Leeds colours.
However, for the first time, Leeds fans have seen the best of their summer signing. And they can rest easy knowing that, even when the rest of the team is not performing, they can rely on Wiedwald to give them the best possible chance of a result.
