Reports in Spain suggest that 142-cap Mexican midfielder Andres Guardado could leave Real Betis for Leeds United.

Now, this is either the most ridiculous transfer rumour you’ll hear all winter or Leeds United are genuinely hoping to pull off one of the most impressive pound-for-pound signings in English football this season.

According to Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Andres Guardado’s brilliant form in La Liga for Real Betis has Leeds United dreaming of the Mexican international strutting his stuff at Elland Road in the near future.

The report claims that Leeds would be willing to offer just over £5 million for the 31-year-old midfielder – almost double the fee Betis paid PSV Eindhoven for his signature this summer.

And while such a profit would represent good business for a player on the wrong side of the big three zero, what are the chances of Leeds actually luring Guardado from one of the most exciting sides in Spain’s first division?

Yet, if we imagine that a deal is genuinely possible, Leeds would be pulling off a transfer that would have their Championship rivals green with envy. In fact, signing Guardado would rival any piece of business league leaders Wolves have done since super-agent Jorge Mendes started his affiliation with the Black Country club.

Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and Ivan Cavaleiro are far too good for the Championship – but Guardado too would look more than comfortable in the Premier League.

Signing of the season?

Guardado has 142 caps for Mexico, represented Deportivo, Valencia and Leverkusen before hoovering up successive Eredivisie titles with PSV, winning the league’s 2014/15 Player of the Year award to boot.

But even in the autumn days of his career, Guardado remains evergreen. Evolving from an exciting winger into a classy midfield playmaker, he has produced six assists in 10 La Liga starts since moving to Betis and has been one of the standout signings in Spain.

Though we’ll believe this move when we see it Leeds fans.
