Leeds United sold Liam Bridcutt to Championship rivals Nottingham Forest for just £1m in 2017 – could a return to Elland Road be on the cards?
In hindsight, maybe Leeds United should have kept hold of Liam Bridcutt.
The Whites let their captain leave for Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2017, selling the experienced midfielder for just £1 million weeks into Thomas Christiansen’s reign at Elland Road.
But it’s tempting to wonder what sort of a role Bridcutt would have played at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.
The former Brighton and Sunderland powerhouse is not the most technically gifted of players but he possesses great energy, leadership and work-rate – attributes that Bielsa’s high-pressing style rely upon very heavily.
And with reports in the Nottingham Post suggesting that Bridcutt could be up for sale in January with Forest wanting to trim the fat from a bloated squad, director of football Victor Orta should seriously consider bringing back a player who sold a year-and-a-half earlier.
Yes, Bridcutt might not have the ball-playing skills to force Mateusz Klich or Kalvin Phillips onto the bench but the 29-year-old’s big-game nous and experience would potentially prove crucial in the second half of the season with promotion on the line.
The two-time Scotland international would perhaps be a galvanising force both on and off the pitch.
