Leeds United seem keen on enhancing their options at right-back, so raiding Championship rivals Aston Villa for Alan Hutton might be a good idea.
Right-back may be one of the stronger areas of a rather weak Leeds United squad, but that has not stopped the club from looking at potential new additions ahead of the summer transfer window.
The versatile duo Gaetano Berardi and Vurnon Anita are both capable of playing on the right side of defence while regular starter Luke Ayling, one of the top performers since his 2016 move from Bristol City, is out injured. And that is without mentioning Lewie Coyle, who will return this summer from an impressive loan spell at Fleetwood Town.
Although if there is one free-agent right-back who should be on Leeds’ radar, it is Alan Hutton. Despite suggestions that Aston Villa could look to keep him around, the Scot is still set to leave on a free this summer with the Mirror claiming that Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town are at the front of the queue.
And while Hutton is 33 these days, his age could be a help to Leeds rather than a hindrance. This is a largely youthful squad with a lack of Championship experience, and the former Scotland international could therefore be an astute addition both on and off the pitch at Elland Road.
Hutton is consistent, competitive and knows what it takes to grind out results at this level – attributes Leeds could do with.
