After just seven games, is Laurens de Bock finished at Leeds United already?

Leeds paid £1.5 million to sign De Bock in January from Club Brugge in the hope that he would fill the void at left-back created by the departure of Charlie Taylor to Burnley last summer. But despite some bright early displays, the optimism that surrounded De Bock’s arrival quickly disappeared.

Damningly, the Whites conceded 16 goals in the seven Championship fixtures that De Bock started and his season ended early thanks to a hamstring injury. So his error-prone display in the 2-2 draw with Reading back in March could well prove to be his last game for the club.

Belgian outlet Voetbal 24 claimed recently that De Bock’s future at Leeds looked bleak, especially after he was left out of the 22-man squad for the post-season trip to Myanmar.

Bild suggests that Leeds are closing in on the signing of the highly-rated Union Berlin left-back Kristian Pedersen, with the Danish defender set to move to England’s second tier sooner rather than later.

And, if this wasn’t enough to push De Bock down the pecking order, the 20-year-old Tom Pearce thrived at left-back in his injury enforced absence in the final games of 2017/18. HITC Sport understands that Pearce has agreed a new deal at Elland Road.

But rather that criticise Leeds for De Bock’s struggles, the club should perhaps be praised for realising that he simply isn’t good enough and finding a replacement as quickly as possible.

If De Bock is sold and Pedersen takes his place, Leeds will have acted swiftly, decisively and, the fans will hope, correctly.
