Former Tottenham and Wigan defender Reto Ziegler has been tipped to return to England with Leeds United.
Leeds United fans could be forgiven for needing to jog their memory when Swiss publication RTS linked them with a move for Reto Ziegler last week.
The 31-year-old left-back is no stranger to English football but it’s been a long time since he graced these shores. Ten years in fact.
The former Tottenham Hotspur defender, who spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic in 2006, has spent the last decade bouncing around the continent and even joined Juventus five years later, though he failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Turin giants.
However, after his contract at Swiss side FC Sion ended at the end of last season, Ziegler is a free agent and RTS claims that Leeds have been in touch with regards to a surprise return to England.
The loan signing of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson from Manchester United and the impressive recent form of Gaetano Berardi means Leeds aren’t exactly short of options at left-back but Ziegler’s experience and versatility may make him a solid addition.
The 35-time Swiss international, who has represented his country at two World Cups, can also play at centre-half, an area Leeds must strengthen before the end of the transfer window.
However, if Leeds want to get a twelfth summer signing across the line, they may have to act fast. Swiss paper La Matin claimed on Friday that Ziegler was in talks with Sion over a new deal just weeks after leaving the club following a series of injury issues.
And the report now adds that he is training with the club’s youth team to prove his fitness and could be rewarded with the option to extend his stay with the Swiss club.
As such, Leeds should see this as a warning.
