Leeds United rejected the chance to sign Grimsby Town striker Omar Bogle in January – a decision that is looking better all the time.
Leeds United’s 3-1 Championship defeat to Cardiff City on Tuesday night was disappointing enough but at least they avoided the added humiliation of conceding to a player they turned down the chance to sign in January.
Considering that Bogle had scored 21 goals in 32 games in the first few months of the season, that decision looked a risky one at the time with Chris Wood Leeds’ only senior centre-forward. Yet, after scoring just three goals in 15 games for Wigan, failing to keep them in the second tier, Leeds’ decision not to sign the striker appeared to be justified.
Nonetheless, Leeds would have been relieved not to see Bogle, who featured for the first time since moving to Cardiff for £1 million in the summer in Saturday’s win at Sunderland (The Mail), come off the bench with Thomas Christiansen’s side a man down on Tuesday.
Bogle was named among the substitutes by manager Neil Warnock but, with Kenneth Zohore starring and scoring twice, that is where he stayed.
The jury is very much still out on whether or not the former Grimsby goal-machine can cut it at Championship level. And Leeds will be grateful that Bogle was not given the chance to prove a point agains the team that rejected him in the winter.
As it stands, Leeds’ decision is looking better all the time.
