Matthew Pennington has only started five Championship games on loan at Leeds United from Everton.
Leeds United still haven’t seen the best of Matthew Pennington.
Big things were expected when this Rolls Royce of a centre-half arrived at Elland Road in the summer on a season-long loan deal from Premier League giants Everton. Thanks to injury and the form of both Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper, however, Pennington has started just five Championship games so far.
But it seems that the 23-year-old has still done enough in his short time at Leeds to convince the club’s chiefs to try and sign him on a permanent basis.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds are hoping that Everton be open to offers for Pennington – though they will delay any move until the end of the season, giving the youngster more time to show why he deserves to stay.
And the former England Under-19 international certainly has more to do in order to win over the Elland Road faithful. After will, with Pennington under contract at Everton until 2019, the Premier League side would likely demand quite a hefty fee for their Premier League B winning starlet.
With Pennington currently third in the pecking order and struggling to force his way into the starting XI, it’s understandable that Leeds fans want to see more from him before he joins on a full-time basis.
