Championship giants Leeds United have reportedly cooled their interest in Preston North End striker Jordan Hugill due to his over-inflated price-tag.
If the unveiling of a new club crest was supposed to divert the attention away from Leeds United’s disappointing transfer window, it certainly worked.
The Elland Road faithful put aside their gripes over the lack of a new centre-forward and instead vented their fury at a badge seemingly OK’d by 10,000 but liked by no one.
Though managing director Angus Kinnear got fans talking about the lack of investment just a few hours later when discussing the possibility of Leeds making a move for Preston North End hitman Jordan Hugill.
And Kinnear appeared to add credence to those reports in an interview with the BBC.
“Well I think it’s not that we couldn’t, because I think we have the potential to (sign Hugill). But it’s about making sure we get value for the player,” Kinnear said.
“And a lot of the names that have been suggested in the press I don’t think have the potential to deliver – or are significantly better than what we have currently.
“And I also think they would be a departure from our model of being able to operate sustainably from a financial perspective.”
Understandably, this has had quite a strong response from Leeds fans. On one hand, Hugill is a proven Championship striker who would immediately improve Thomas Christiansen’s starting XI.
On the other, however, £8 million is an eye-watering fee and Leeds could possibly get better for less.
