Crystal Palace have released Fraizer Campbell at the end of his contract but will Leeds United challenge Huddersfield Town for his signature?

There were two glaring omissions from Crystal Palace’s recently announced ‘retained list’. With their contracts expiring in the summer, Joe Ledley and Fraizer Campbell are both free to go to a good home.

While the former would be an astute addition for most teams in the top two tiers, especially one in need of a tenacious, hard-working and reliable central midfielder, the latter’s Championship pedigree means he too should be in demand.

One-time England international Campbell may have only spent two seasons in the second tier in a career spent largely in the Premier League. But he appears to have something of a golden touch.

Promotion pedigree

Inspiring Hull City to promotion in 2008 with 15 goals in 34 games on loan from Manchester United, Campbell repeated the trick five years on.

Cardiff City may have only spent one season in the top flight but it was thanks in part to the striker’s seven goals in 12 games that they got their in the first place, lifting the Championship title along the way.

Therefore, Campbell’s exit from Crystal Palace has not passed by the supporters of Leeds United. The Whites’ need for a goalscorer to take the pressure of Chris Wood was clear to see as a late season collapse cost them a place in the play-offs last season.

With The Guardian claiming that recently promoted Huddersfield Town are keen on bringing the 29-year-old back to his hometown this summer, Leeds would face a challenge luring Campbell to Elland Road.
