Fraizer Campbell’s disappointing spell at Crystal Palace should not overshadow his undoubted qualities; Leeds United could do with a striker of his ilk.

Huddersfield Town’s class of 2017 may be, in the words of manager David Wagner, bona fide club legends. However, that does not make the prospect of a first top flight campaign since 1972 any less daunting.

As it stands, Huddersfield’s squad appears in no way ready to take on the Premier League – especially with key players Aaron Mooy, Danny Ward and Izzy Brown set to return to their parent clubs after making history on loan at the John Smith’s Stadium.

And, as Middlesbrough will tell you, possessing a reliable goalscorer could be the difference between staying up and going down. The Terrier’s most prolific marksman in 2016/17, Elias Kachunga, netted just 12 times.

Bargain of the summer?

Therefore, links with West Ham youngster Ashley Fletcher and Crystal Palace’s forgotten man Fraizer Campbell make some sense.

The Guardian claim that Campbell will be let go on a free when his contract expires this summer and may be on his way to Huddersfield.

Though you wonder if this will spark interest from a more easterly part of Yorkshire. Leeds have been linked with the former Manchester United prospect on a number of occasions over the years, The Examiner claiming they wanted him on loan in January 2016.

And although Chris Wood stormed to the Championship Golden Boot, Leeds’ lack of alternative goal scorers cost them a place in the play-offs in the season just gone. The Whites lost three games without scoring a goal in April alone.

Therefore, whoever inherits Leeds’ squad from the departed Garry Monk this summer will surely make a new striker a priority. Campbell may not be the most prolific but, on a free transfer, he could be the affordable back-up option the club are crying out for.
