Championship outfit Leeds United are reportedly hopeful of signing Barry Douglas from Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Leeds United’s reported approach for Barry Douglas can certainly be filed under the category of ‘ambitious’.
The Scottish left-back was one of the star players as Wolves cruised to the Championship title last season while no one in the division bettered his tally of 14 assists. And with Wolves preparing for life in the Premier League, Leeds fans could be forgiven for doubting whether this deal is even possible.
But, according to The Mail, it might just be on the cards.
It is understood that Wolves will complete the signing of Spanish left-back Jonny Castro on loan from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday and, as a result, Nuno is prepared to sanction the shock sale of Douglas.
Furthermore, negotiations with Leeds have already taken place with an agreement on a transfer fee possible this week. So after so much frustration over the lack of activity at Elland Road, signing Douglas would be a spectacular way to kick-start Marcelo Bielsa’s first transfer window in English football.
The former Dundee United ace was the best left-back in the Championship bar none in 2017/18 and would be a huge improvement on the likes of Laurens De Bock, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Vurnon Anita, who all shared the role last season.
In fact, signing Douglas would be one of the most impressive deals anywhere in the Championship this summer – and would be a much needed statement of intent from Leeds.
