Jay-Roy Grot scored in the Eredivisie for VVV Venlo after Leeds United suffered a Championship defeat to Blackburn Rovers.
It was a good weekend for Leeds United strikers. Well, those out on loan anyway.
Mallik Wilks returned to the Doncaster Rovers starting XI after being dropped recently and rewarded manager Grant McCann’s patience with a goal in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Gillingham.
And, after his parent club suffered a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, Jay-Roy Grot found himself on the score-sheet too.
The Dutch U21 international came off the bench to net the clinching goal in VVV Venlo’s 2-0 win against ADO Den Haag on Saturday, thrashing home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
And Leeds fans were understandably delighted to see Grot enhance his reputation in the Eredivisie.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Grot at Leeds. A 2017 signing from NEC Nijmegen, the rangy forward scored just once in 20 Championship games under Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom, though only one of those came from the start.
And a record of two goals in nine Eredivisie games for VVV is far from prolific. But Grot’s versatility, strength and ability to bully defenders while cutting inside from the wing could cause problems in the rough and tumble of the Championship.
