Matey Vydra’s £11m move to Elland Road fell through last summer when Leeds United couldn’t agree personal terms. He joined Premier League Burnley instead.

Patrick Bamford suffered the brunt of many fans’ criticism after Leeds United threw away their hopes of Premier League promotion in a chastening end to an otherwise outstanding season.

Not only did the £7 million striker miss chance after chance in crucial games, he also failed to replicate the intensity or the poacher’s instinct provided by the oft-injured Kemar Roofe. In short, the languid Bamford never looked like a centre-forward leading the line for a Marcelo Bielsa side.

So, given the opportunity, Leeds cannot afford to pass up a second chance to finally sign a prolific Championship striker they were very keen on last summer.

According to Sky Sports, Matej Vydra was on the verge of moving to Elland Road last summer for £11 million – only for the deal to fall through due to personal terms.

The Czech international joined Burnley instead but, after starting just three Premier League games and scoring once, his future at Turf Moor is increasingly uncertain. According to The Mirror (20 May, page 50), Vydra is set for ‘showdown talks’ with Clarets manager Sean Dyche with a summer exit looking like a serious possibility.

Now, the 27-year-old scored 21 goals in his final Championship season with Derby County. And he looks like the kind of serial poacher Leeds need if they are to finally bring an end to their Premier League exile.
