Leeds United have reportedly identified Manchester United striker James Wilson as a potential January target.
With one goal in their last three Championship games, it is probably not a surprise that Thomas Christiansen is seemingly thinking about bolstering his attacking options, but do Leeds actually need to sign Wilson on loan?
The Whites faced the extremely difficult task of trying to replace Chris Wood in the summer, and they did it by signing Jay-Roy Grot, Pawel Cibicki and Caleb Ekuban permanently as well as landing Pierre-Michel Lasogga on loan.
Though the fact that Lasogga is the only one to have scored in the league for Leeds so far may leave some supporters feeling that signing a new striker is needed in January, there have surely got to be questions about whether Wilson is the answer.
The 21-year-old’s record in the Championship is not overly impressive, and he has not made a senior appearance for any club since Derby’s win over Leeds just over a year ago.
With Grot, Cibicki and Ekuban also in the ranks, Leeds already have a cluster of forwards who, at the moment, provide support and cover for the first choice option.
Therefore, Leeds should now arguably be looking to land a much more proven striker in the January window who is a genuine contender to become the first choice option rather than someone like Wilson.
While the Manchester United youngster appears to have the potential to enjoy a very bright future, surely he cannot be relied upon to be the marquee addition in January that is going to boost Leeds’ promotion hopes, and thus, Christiansen should perhaps consider whether Wilson arriving in January for a short time would actually provide the Whites with something they currently do not have.
