Rangers got back on track against Motherwell at Ibrox, thrashing Stephen Robinson’s side 7-1 in the Scottish Premiership.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Steven Gerrard desperately wanted to see a change from his Rangers side after a worrying couple of weeks at Ibrox.

The Gers missed out on a place in the Scottish League Cup semi-final after an insipid 1-0 loss to Hamilton, and their defensive deficiencies were laid bare in brutal fashion in a 4-3 Europa League collapse against Spartak Moscow on Thursday.

So that made Sunday’s 7-1 thrashing of Motherwell all the more important, particularly when you consider that a number of Rangers’ fringe players stepped up in style.

Speaking to the Evening Times, former captain Lee McCulloch has singled out two players for praise – goal-scorers Eros Grezda and Glenn Middleton.

“On an afternoon of huge positives, another pleasing factor was the strength in depth of the squad that was being showcased, with Eros Grezda getting off the mark and Glenn Middleton showing yet again that he can really add something to this Rangers team from the left-hand side,” McCulloch said.

“There will be injuries and suspensions to contend with, and it will be vital that the Rangers side isn’t significantly weakened when manager Gerrard has to turn to his back-up players if they are to keep pace at the top of the division.”

Grezda, a £2 million signing from Osijek in August, scored his first two goals for Rangers in the thrashing of Stephen Robinson’s Motherwell.

Former Norwich City starlet Middleton, meanwhile, has looked impressive whenever he has been given a chance and has already netted five times under Gerrard’s stewardship.

With Grezda and Middleton proving that they can cut it from the start in league football, the former Liverpool skipper has even more options at his disposal.
