Allan McGregor returned to Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers on a free from Hull City in the summer and has shone for Steven Gerrard.

They say you should never go back. Football history is littered with examples of players who have only taken the shine off their reputation after an emotional homecoming went wrong, from Andriy Shevchenko’s ill-fated return to AC Milan to Robbie Fowler’s forgettable second stint at Liverpool.
But the same cannot be said about Allan McGregor.
The popular goalkeeper won 11 trophies at Rangers between 2001 and 2012 and, at the age of 36, there were plenty who doubted whether he could make a similar impact when he returned to Ibrox on a free from Hull City in May.
But to say McGregor has been a revelation would be under playing things. The veteran Scottish stopper has picked up where he left off in style, producing a series of outstanding virtuoso displays to help Steven Gerrard’s side to the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
And, speaking to the Evening Times, former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has lauded McGregor’s form, going as far as to call him world class.
“Allan McGregor is a world class goalkeeper that has saved Rangers so many points and given them so many chances, both in the Premiership and the Europa League, already this season. He has been by far the best signing that was made in the summer,” McCulloch said.

“He has been a revelation this season but I am not surprised in the slightest because the guy is a winner. And he is one helluva goalkeeper.”
Rangers pulled off some impressive signings in the off-season with Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield, Lassana Coulibaly, Ryan Kent and co making a positive impression at Ibrox in recent months. But no one can come close to McGregor right now – who has been called world class for the second time in a week.
Gerrard picked the perhaps overused phrase as recently as Thursday when describing his goalkeeper’s performance in the 0-0 Europa League draw with Villarreal, as reported by the Scottish Sun.
