Southampton’s Premier League midfielder Steven Davis is reportedly on his way back to Ibrox with Rangers in the January transfer window.

It seems that Steven Davis’ emotional return to Rangers is edging ever closer.

According to the Scottish Sun, the Glasgow giants are set to sign the Northern Ireland international from Southampton and, after months of speculation, it is understood that Davis is set to undergo a medical in the near future.

An 18-month deal, which will see the 34-year-old earn £12,000 a week, has reportedly been agreed already.

It remains to be seen if Davis can replicate the success of his first spell at Ibrox, during which he won three Scottish Premiership titles in four years.

But, speaking to the Evening Times, former Rangers midfielder Lee McCulloch has given Davis’ return the green light, believing he would add a spark to a midfield that was hugely impressive in the 1-0 win against arch rivals Celtic in late December.

“This squad still has to improve and there will be deals done to sign a midfielder and a striker in particular,” McCulloch said.

“Scott Arfield was brilliant in the middle of the park (against Celtic) and that was an area where Rangers have rightly been criticised in these fixtures over the last couple of years. But Arfield, Ryan Jack and Ross McCrorie just clicked. They won the battle and earned the right to play.

“Adding someone like Steven Davis would give the manager another quality option in there.”

The former Aston Villa and Fulham midfielder has made just one Premier League start all season and, tellingly, has not featured at all since Ralph Hasenhuttl replaced Mark Hughes at St Mary’s at the start of December.

So Davis will have to prove that he still has plenty to offer as he enters the autumn days of his career.
