Sheffield United signed Welsh international midfielder Lee Evans from Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in January.
Once Wolves shattered the Championship’s transfer record to sign Portuguese international Ruben Neves and landed Alfred N’Diaye on loan from Europa League outfit Villarreal, there was no room at Molineux for Lee Evans.
The 23-year-old midfielder had been at Wolves since signing from Newport County back in 2013 and established himself as a semi-regular member of the side last season under Walter Zenga and then Paul Lambert.
But after the arrival of Neves and N’Diaye, the Midland side wasted little time in farming Evans out to Wigan Athletic on loan until January – and then promptly selling him to Championship rivals Sheffield United for a fee of £700,000, per the Yorkshire Post.
But while Evans could not get a game at Molineux, he already looks a real star at Bramall Lane.
Evans made his fifth start for Sheffield United in Tuesday’s 2-1 win against Queens Park Rangers and stood out impressively. He was a figure of class and composure in the centre of the park, winning back possession regularly and distributing the ball with real precision.
No wonder the Blades fans took to social media to praise Evans’ impact, one even describing him as the ‘signing of the season’.
If anything, the fact this one-time Wales international was not needed at Molineux shows just how strong Wolves’ squad is.
But although Evans has missed out on the chance to pick up a Championship winners medal and be part of a Premier League side next season, a move to Sheffield United already looks to be exactly what he needed.
