The Real Betis left-back would cost £17m but Liverpool are desperate for a left-back.
Although James Milner continues to perform admirably at left-back, you get the feeling that Liverpool will forever miss that next step unless Jurgen Klopp addresses the worrying holes in his squad.
The outcasted Alberto Moreno now appears more a cackling mascot than a professional defender having not started a Premier League start since October, so it makes sense that the Reds might start looking around for alternatives, as reported by the Daily Mail.
And although fans may clamour for Fulham’s teen sensation Ryan Sessegnon, it seems that Klopp may have his eye on a rather less heralded player.
The Daily Mail reported in January that Liverpool had sent scouts to check out Real Betis left-back Riza Durmisi who, after only signing from Brondby last summer, has a hefty £17million release clause in his contract.
And the Danish international has now admitted that he is flattered by the interest.
“When Liverpool and other big clubs show interest, of course it’s good,” Durmisi told the club’s official website. “But the main thing for me is Betis.”
The 23-year-old has largely impressed in La Liga this season, starting 20 games for Betis and coming into his own since the attack-minded Victor Sanchez arrived at the Estadio Benito Villamarin to sweep away the stodgy pragmatism of Gus Poyet.
Durmisi is, as you might expect from a Klopp target, a typically modern full-back with excellent crossing ability and a penchant for set-pieces.
The problem, however, is that he is not exactly renowned for his defensive solidity, with tackling a particular weakness in his game.
Moreno is a more than capable attacker. Yet, the club is crying out for a full-back who can combine both defensive and attacking instincts and Liverpool supporters will have their doubts as to whether Durmisi is the man they need.
Especially for £17million.
