Kundai Benyu failed to make a single Scottish Premiership appearance for Celtic in 2018/19 and he is currently in Sweden with Helsingborgs.

Kundai Benyu has admitted that he still hopes for a future at Celtic but insists the chance to join Helsingborgs on loan was too good to turn down, while speaking to Fotboll Skanalen.

The Scottish Premiership champions snapped up the coveted youngster in the summer of 2017, allegedly beating the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and West Ham United to a player who was tipped for big things at Ipswich Town (the Mail).

But Benyu’s time at Celtic soon went sour. He failed to make an initial impression under Brendan Rodgers and was farmed out to Sweden in February, having made a grand total of zero appearances for the Hoops during the 2018/19 campaign.

The Zimbabwe international is thrilled to be given a chance to rebuild his career in Scandinavia, however, while pointing out that he harbours no ill-feeling towards the now Leicester City boss Rodgers.

“It was time to leave and get more experience with senior football,” said Benyu.

“This is a good club, it is good standard in Swedish football. Hopefully I can play many games and return (to Celtic) to see what’s the plan.

“You know how football is. Things go up and down, just like that. I had a setback and was not so involved, but things like that happen in football. You only have to work and work.

“Brendan is a good trainer and I really have no problems with him. We had a good relationship.”

Benyu will play for Helsingborgs until January 2020 and will be hoping to catch the eye of Neil Lennon, or whoever is Celtic’s first-team manager by the time his spell in Northern Europe comes to an end.
