Rangers battered St Johnstone 5-1 on Sunday while Celtic slipped to a 2-1 Scottish Premiership defeat away at Kilmarnock.

The difference in mood between Rangers and Celtic could hardly be more pronounced right now.

While Celtic have picked up only one point from their last two Scottish Premiership games – a 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock consigning the Hoops to their worst start to a season in 20 years – Rangers continue to go from strength to strength under Steven Gerrard.

The Gers have now scored nine goals in two league games, following the 4-0 thrashing of Dundee with a 5-1 win against St Johnstone on Sunday.

Five different players – James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield, Kyle Lafferty and Daniel Candeias – all scored against the Saints, and former Ibrox hero Kris Boyd believes Celtic do not have the same ability to spread goals around the team.

“Every successful team has players who can chip in from everywhere and that’s what Rangers are doing. Their scoring goals from all over the pitch and they’ll be very confident now,” Boyd told Jim White on talkSPORT (24 September, 12.50pm) when discussing the difference between Rangers and Celtic.

“There’s still a massive gap between rangers and Celtic. But Rangers have to go out and go toe-to-toe with them.

“If Rangers can win the games against the rest of the teams in the league then they’ll give themselves and opportunity and they’re doing that right now. There’s a title race on.”

There is a long way to go this season, however, and it must be remembered that Rangers were comfortably outplayed in their 1-0 Old Firm defeat away to Celtic before the international break.

And, for all the talk about Celtic’s ‘crisis’, they are just a point behind Gerrard’s team in the table.
