Sevilla reportedly want to bring Kiko Casilla back to La Liga, six months after the goalkeeper joined Leeds United.
Kiko Casilla’s spell at Leeds United could go down in infamy, although not necessarily for the right reasons.
Fans were understandably thrilled when Casilla joined on a free transfer in January. After all, it’s not every day that Elland Road welcomes a Spain international who lifted the Champions League trophy in the colours of Real Madrid just a few months previously.
At the time, Leeds were favourites for automatic promotion and the arrival of this experienced, top level goalkeeper appeared to represent one giant stride towards the Premier League.
Six months later, however, a large section of supporters are even wondering whether Casilla should be Marcelo Bielsa’s number one by the time the new season kicks off.
A series of nervy, heart-stopping performances have raised doubts about the former Espanyol stopper, who was sent off in a crucial defeat to Sheffield United before that calamitous cock-up against Derby cost Leeds dear in the play-off semi finals.
And some would even welcome claims from Marca that Sevilla’s esteemed sporting director Monchi has enquired about the possibility of bringing Casilla back to La Liga.
The question is, however, could the 32-year-old be tempted to bid farewell to the rolling hills of West Yorkshire, just six months after he arrived to huge fanfare?
Well, Sevilla do have the advantage of Europa League football but, while Casilla is still Leeds’ number one, a return to Spain would lead him straight to the bench.
The Andalusians already have one of La Liga’s best shot-stoppers in Czech international Tomas Vaclik and the chances of Casilla taking his place in the starting XI look slim.
It all boils down to where Casilla sees himself in the autumn of his career. Does he have the appetite to bounce back and become a legend at Leeds? Or would he be happy enough waiting in the wings at Sevilla?
