The homegrown left-back has been subjected to intense transfer rumours since a superb breakthrough season under Brendan Rodgers last year, in which he confirmed his status as one of British football’s brightest shining young stars.
Consequently, the Daily Record reported earlier this month that Manchester United sent scouts to watch Tierney in action during the 4-0 Betfred Cup thrashing over Dundee. It was not the first time Jose Mourinho’s side, who have alternated between Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo at left-back in recent times, have watched Celtic’s 20-year-old starlet up close.
The report also added that Tottenham Hotspur were interested while the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have never been too far away from the gossip columns.
And Tierney’s stand-out Champions League display in midweek will do little to dampen the speculation that a big-money move to the Premier League beckons. BT Sport pundit Steven Gerrard predicted that ‘a lot of sides are watching him’ (The Mirror) after Tierney’s pinpoint cross put Celtic’s first of a 3-0 win on a plate for Leigh Griffiths.
Therefore, Celtic supporters should brace themselves for another round of intense speculation surrounding a player who has even admitted himself that remaining at his boyhood club remains the immediate priority.
Nonetheless, you’d imagine Mourinho would have been purring as Tierney proves his credentials at the very top of the European game.
Tierney may want to stay but Celtic may be hard-pushed rejecting a huge offer.
