Kevin Thelwell comments on Leander Dendoncker’s Wolves future amid ongoing absence

Leander Dendoncker has not been included in a single Premier League squad since he arrived at Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Leander Dendoncker has not really got going at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After months of links with Premier League clubs, the Belgian international finally arrived in English football in August. Newly promoted Wolves signed Dendoncker on a season-long loan from Anderlecht with the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign for £12 million.

So far, however, the 23-year-old has made just two appearances for Wolves, both coming in the EFL Cup. Worryingly, he has not been included in any of Nuno Espirito Santo’s 18-man Premier League squads since his arrival at Molineux.

But, in quotes reported by the Birmingham Mail, sporting director Kevin Thelwell has indicated that Dendoncker’s future is indeed in the Black Country.

“He is a Belgian international and a very good player,” Thelwell (below, left) said, before going on to claim that Dendoncker had been bought for the ‘long-term’.

The World Cup semi-finalist is capable of playing both in central midfield and at the heart of a defensive back three, meaning he fits into Nuno’s blueprint on paper.

But the former Porto and Valencia manager has shown an unwillingness to change his team so far, so it remains to be seen when Dendoncker will get his Premier League chance.
