Just eight months after walking out on Derby County, Gary Rowett has been sacked by Championship rivals Stoke City.
The definition of ‘schadenfreude’ goes as follows; ‘the pleasure derived by someone from another person’s misfortune’.
And you could hardly blame Derby County fans for being united in sneering laughter as Gary Rowett packs his belongings and bids an unhappy farewell to Stoke City.
Rams supporters were left incensed after Rowett jumped ship in May after all, joining Championship rivals Stoke just days after Derby’s play-off semi-final defeat to Fulham.
According to The Telegraph, the former Birmingham and Burton boss’ decision was heavily influenced by being informed that his wage bill at Derby would be slashed in half. But there was still something rather unseemly about his sudden departure and almost immediate appointment down the road at the Potters.
And, despite boasting one of the Championship’s most talented squads and having spent over £30 million in the summer, Rowett has now been sacked by Stoke after just eight months in charge.
Stoke are 14th in the table, eight places and eight points behind a Derby side who have made great strides since the inexperienced Frank Lampard replaced him at Pride Park.
And it’s fair to say news of Rowett’s exit has lifted the mood in a cloudy January morning in Derbyshire.
