Nottingham Forest are expected to offer £2million for Gavin Whyte after his superb season at Oxford United.

Gavin Whyte’s rapid rise is showing no signs of slowing down.

This time last year, the highly-rated winger was celebrating his third Northern Irish league title, having plundered a career-best 24 goals for Crusaders. He was named the Ulster Player of the Year to boot.

Flash forward 12 months and the Belfast Telegraph (2 June, back page) are reporting that Nottingham Forest are set to make a £2 million bid for Whyte on the back of an impressive debut season at Oxford United.

These days, Whyte is an established Northern Ireland international and a move to the City Ground would be a logical next step for a player who appears to be getting better by the year.

Oxford manager Karl Robinson certainly expected the 23-year-old’s career to take off when he brought him to the Kassam Stadium and it seems that his prophecy was absolutely on the money.

“We took a big chance on him in the summer, paid a bit of money for him, and that’s certainly probably one of the best deals I’ve ever made in relation to a football club,” the former Charlton and MK Dons boss in April after Whyte hit a hat-trick against Shrewsbury, while speaking to the Telegraph.

“He’s performing, he’s fantastic. He’s electric, the little man.”

The test now is for Whyte to prove that he can smash through the glass ceiling and thrive in the Championship after proving that he is far too good for League One.
