The sudden Premier League interest in Josh Maja threatens to overshadow the impressive progress Sunderland have made this season.

The teenage striker has been in terrific form since Jack Ross made him the Black Cats’ number one striker, scoring nine goals in 12 League One starts to fire the Wearside giants into third place in the early-season table.

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton are keen on 19-year-old Maja. As are Manchester City, who released the striker in 2015 before his move to Sunderland.

And considering that Maja is out of contract at the end of the season, you can understand why fans would be worried. But maybe they shouldn’t be.

After all, back in September Maja claimed that staying at the Stadium of Light was his priority.

“I’m happy at the club right now,” the Sunderland Echo reports. “All I’m focused on is getting the club back to where it should be and that is the Premier League.”

The Echo adds that Sunderland have initiated talks over a new contract with Maja. But it remains to be seen now whether reported interest from Spurs, City and The Saints could turn the youngster’s head.

Getting Maja tied down as soon as possible should be Sunderland’s top priority over the next few weeks.
