West Ham United supporters have turned on the club’s owners David Sullivan and David Gold this season.
West Ham are facing an uphill task to survive after their worst ever start to a Premier League season.
Just two wins from their opening 15 games leaves the Hammers in the relegation zone on 10 points and facing daunting back-to-back London derbies against Chelsea and Arsenal.
West Ham are arguably the biggest underachievers in the top flight this season and co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold are feeling the heat with fans turning on them in great numbers and calling for the duo to sell the club.
West Ham’s form will have been a surprise Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, though, after the Portuguese singled the Hammers out with some interesting comments in pre-season.
In a prediction which seems laughable now, Mourinho backed the Hammers to challenge for the Premier League title back in July, as reported by the likes of the Evening Standard at the time.
“We need a bit more when you see the other teams in the Premier League, like Man City, Liverpool and West Ham, the way they get players, good players, important players.
“The champions have bought three fantastic experienced players. I am thinking about West Ham for the first match of the Premier League.
“They have got Joe Hart, Chicharito and Arnautovic. It looks like they are playing to win the Premier League too.”
West Ham brought in Pablo Zabaleta, on a free, Joe Hart on loan, striker Javier Hernandez for £16million and sanctioned a club-record £24million move for Marko Arnautovic.
In hindsight the club needed a lot more, particularly in defence given they had the fifth worst goals against record last season.
But do Mourinho’s comments suggest the owners should not be blamed for the club’s poor return so far as they were deemed to have done great business by one of the best managers around just a few months ago.
Now it is up to David Moyes to get those players into a winning team shape which can garner enough points to survive.
