Jordan Thompson failed to force his way into Rangers’ Scottish Premiership side and moved to League One outfit Blackpool on a free this summer.
Rangers are not exactly short of quality in central midfield right now so fans thrilled with the progress they’ve made under Steven Gerrard might not be too concerned about how Jordan Thompson is getting on at Blackpool.
The Northern Ireland international spent three years at Ibrox between 2015 and 2018 but made just two league appearances before being released at the end of last season. Thompson then signed a contract with Blackpool and has set about showing Rangers what they’re missing.
The 21-year-old has made 13 appearances so far for the Tangerines, scoring his first goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Rochdale while impressing with his dynamism and ability to drive forward from central midfield.
And, speaking to the Blackpool Gazette, Thompson has admitted that he is loving his time away from Rangers and explained why he decided to ply his trade in England’s North West.
“It’s been brilliant. I came down here to play games,” said Thompson, who has been a regular starter under Terry McPhillips.
“The boys are doing well, so we’re just looking to push on now.”
Blackpool are currently 13th in the third tier of English football but his former Rangers side are flying high both at home and abroad, beating Rapid Vienna and Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts before the international break.
Though with Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans, Stuart Arfield, Lassana Coulibaly, Ovie Ejaria and co all fighting for a place in Rangers side, Thompson looks better off at Blackpool.
