Tuttomercatoweb.com have reported this week that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard at the end of the season.

The Italian publication understands that Mauricio Pochettino was keeping tabs on the 25-year-old last summer, before Spurs bought Davinson Sanchez from Ajax to bolser their centre-back ranks.

With Colombian international Sanchez having settled in rapidly to Premier League life, it would seem that Tottenham only need another defender if they are to lose one from their first-team squad.

Should this raise concerns about the future of Toby Alderweireld? The Belgian is yet to sign a new contract at Spurs with the Daily Mail reporting in December that discussions had reached a deadlock.

According to the Daily Mail, Alderweireld’s contract expires in 2019 and although it does include a 12-month extension option for Spurs, that would trigger a clause which would allow him to leave for £25m.

Vestergaard has 204 Bundesliga appearances under his belt across spells at Gladbach, Hoffenheim 1899 and Werder Bremen. He would not be brought in for the future, but rather for immediate use.

Spurs signed 19-year-old Juan Foyth in the last transfer window, and also have highly-rated 20-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers on their books, so would not want to block the pathway of these youngsters.

If Tottenham are revisiting their interest in the Denmark international, it suggests that they may not be in control of the Alderweireld contract situation and are at risk of having to sell the 28-year-old in the summer.
