Rangers are reportedly set to sign Motherwell’s Hastie for £300k; the same fee Scottish Premiership champions Celtic paid for Sunderland loanee Morgan.

If all goes to plan, Jake Hastie will be confirmed as a Rangers player very soon.

The Express reported last week that the Gers are set to sign the highly-rated winger on a pre-contract agreement from Motherwell in the summer, paying around £300,000 in compensation.

Hastie has only been part of Motherwell’s first team for three months but a tally of six goals in 12 games, and many of those spectacular long-range strikes in the style of his idol Gareth Bale, explains why Rangers and a whole host of other clubs were clamouring to snap up one of Scotland’s biggest talents.

But it is worth remembering that, just over a year ago, another young, homegrown, goal-scoring wide man was attracting plenty of attention from clubs north and south of the border as his contract ran down.

In the end, it was Celtic who won the race to sign St Mirren’s 18-goal talisman Lewis Morgan, paying £300,000 to lure him to Parkhead – the same fee Hastie will go for (BBC).

But it quickly became apparent that Morgan was not ready to make such a step up. The 22-year-old failed to start a single Premiership game for Celtic before being loaned out to Sunderland in January. He has hardly shone their either.

And Hastie must be wary of going the same way. Morgan slipped rapidly down the pecking order after a slow start to life in Glasgow so, with Rangers already boasting the likes of Glenn Middleton, Daniel Candeias and Jordan Jones, the 20-year-old will be under pressure to make a fast start.
