Rangers’ Scottish Premiership goalkeeper Jak Alnwick is reportedly set to join ex-Ibrox boss Stuart McCall at League One club Scunthorpe United.
It quickly became apparent at the start of this season that Jak Alnwick needed to leave Rangers.
Allan McGregor has been Steven Gerrard’s undisputed number one goalkeeper since he made an emotional return to Ibrox from Hull City. And it seems that Wes Foderingham has won the battle to be the back-up, starting the League Cup clash with Kilmarnock a week ago.
Alnwick, then, faced a season being third choice at Ibrox. And, considering he has made just seven league starts since he joined Rangers from Port Vale in January 2017, staying in Glasgow was likely to be detrimental to his own career.
So leaving is the right move. Even if Scunthorpe United, who are 18th in England’s third tier as things stand, represent a substantial step down from a Rangers side who appear to be on the up under Gerrard.
According to the Scottish Sun, the former Newcastle United youngster will join up with one-time Rangers boss Stuart McCall at Glanford Park. Alnwick stood out in League One with Port Vale and should be a fine signing for the Iron.
Although European football and domestic titles may be a distant dream at Scunthorpe, at least Alnwick will be able to get his career back on track.
