Former Port Vale goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has only played one Scottish Premiership game for Rangers since arriving at Ibrox in January 2017.
Wes Foderingham has been Rangers’ number one for almost three years and does not appear to have any appetite to bring his spell at Ibrox to an end.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper admitted that he had options from elsewhere, before putting pen to paper on a new deal back in September. As it stands, Foderingham will be a Rangers player until 2020.
In a video published by the club’s official YouTube channel, Foderingham admitted that talks will take place once again at the end of the season, with the club and player set to have another look at his contract situation.
It would be little surprise, then, if Foderingham even extended his deal beyond the next two years.
And this would not bode well at all for Jak Alnwick. After all, Foderingham has been Rangers’ undisputed number one ever since he arrived, and even the signing of Alnwick from Port Vale in January 2017 did nothing to change that.
In his 13 months at Ibrox, the one-time Newcastle United shot-stopper has made just one league appearance, coming against St Johnstone on the final day of last season. In total, he has played just four games in 2017/18 – a low tally even for a back-up goalkeeper.
So few would blame Alnwick, who cost Rangers £250,000 according to the Daily Record, if he was to consider his future at the end of this season.
He has the talent and potential to play regular first-team football for almost any other club in Scotland’s top flight, plus most in England’s lower leagues, and is in danger of wasting time on the Ibrox bench.
As long as Foderingham stays, Alnwick simply will not get the games he needs at this stage of his career.
