League One outfit Sunderland have been linked with a number of strikers, and now Jai Quitongo is without a club after leaving Partick Thistle.
Whether Sunderland will try to bring a new striker to the Stadium of Light this month remains to be seen but Jack Ross’ side are certainly scouring the market for potential additions – particularly with the future of top scorer Josh Maja up in the air.
Sunderland had been linked with the in-form Exeter City forward Jayden Stockley, as reported by The Mirror (2 January, page 52) but missed out after Preston North End activated his release clause.
Fortunately, however, with one door closing it seems that another has just opened.
TEAMtalk claimed last year that Sunderland have been keeping a close eye on the exciting Scottish forward Jai Quitongo.
The 21-year-old instead left Morton for Partick Thistle but, after a difficult spell in the second tier, he has now been released with his contract having expired on the turn of the year (Transfermarkt).
So Quitongo’s new-found availability should not pass Sunderland by. The Scotland U21 international might have scored just once for Partick but he would surely count as a no-risk signing considering that he can be snapped up for free.
And Jack Ross will know him well, having come up against Quitongo in the Scottish second tier during his time in charge of St Mirren.
