Jerome Sinclair is on loan at League One Sunderland from Premier League high-flyers Watford and scored his first goal in midweek.

Jerome Sinclair has taken a while to get going at Sunderland.

The 22-year-old Watford loanee has only made five appearances in the league since he arrived at the Stadium of Light and failed to score in four of those. But the former Liverpool youngster finally got off the mark on Tuesday, netting in the 2-2 draw against Peterborough United.

The goal will have come as a big relief to Sinclair, particularly after he was subject to intense criticism from some supporters following a poor display in the 2-1 away defeat to Burton Albion in mid-September.

A number of fans took to Twitter to slate the youngster’s display that day at the Pirelli, but manager Jack Ross has now come out and taken the blame, having shoved Sinclair into an unfamiliar role on the wing.

“I played him in a slightly different role at Burton and I take responsibility for that because he didn’t play well,” Ross told the Chronicle.

“We spoke about it, and what he could do to get better, and he has taken it on board and worked really hard in training.”

Ross also lauded Sinclair’s attitude and his performance against Peterborough, which keeps Sunderland within touching distance at the top of the table.

If Sinclair can find form on a regular basis, he could forge an exciting partnership with Josh Maja, the homegrown centre-forward who has eight goals in 11 games already this season.
