League One Sunderland are reportedly hoping to sign John McGinn from Scottish Premiership side Hibernian.

It is difficult to decipher what has been worse at Sunderland in recent years – the results or the football.

The Black Cats have gone from the top flight to the third tier in the space of just 12 months and have won only three games at the Stadium of Light since Christmas 2016. No wonder many fans have decided to spend their Saturday’s elsewhere.

So new manager Jack Ross, who was appointed last month after guiding St Mirren to the Scottish Championship title, has set upon bringing in a style of play that would give fans something to get excited about.

And suddenly a £3 million move for Hibernian talisman John McGinn seems to make even more sense. Because the diminutive yet dynamic central midfielder perfectly fits Ross’s blueprint.

“You have to be adaptable but you also want core aspects to how you do things and that has probably been reflected in all the teams that I’ve managed. They’ve all had an energy about them, a pace about them, they’ve been dynamic,” Ross told the Chronicle.

The Sun states that Sunderland are one of a number of sides keen on 23-year-old Scotland international McGinn, who is valued at £3 million with just one year left on his Hibs contract.

He is a creative yet hard working player who covers the ground with real tenacity, and he would not look out of place as Ross attempts to bring a new brand of forward-thinking and front-foot football to Wearside.
