Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic have been monitoring Jack Rodwell at Sunderland for quite some time and a shock move to Parkhead could be on the cards.
Scott Sinclair might have wondered if he would ever get his career back on track.
That ill-fated move to Manchester City from Swansea in 2012 seemingly left the winger on the scrapheap. Until Brendan Rodgers came along that is.
As reported by the Guardian, Celtic paid £3 million to rescue Sinclair from Aston Villa in 2016 and, after failing to find his feet in the Midlands, soon offered a reminder of just why Manchester City took a punt on him in the first place.
The winger helped Celtic to the domestic treble in his first season north of the border, winning the Scottish Premiership’s Golden Boot award to cap a sensational campaign. Rodgers had saved Sinclair’s career and got him performing at those levels prior to that misjudged move to Manchester.
But could he have the same impact on another once promising England starlet who followed Sinclair to the Etihad in the summer of 2012?
Jack Rodwell may be hoping so.
According to the Sunderland Echo, Rodwell has asked to be freed of his £70,000-a-week deal at the Stadium of Light. And Celtic could make a move for a player they have been tracking for the last few months and considered signing on loan during the summer.
Rodgers could have his work cut out turning Rodwell back into the player who looked to be the future of England and Manchester City’s midfield when the Premier League champions paid Everton £12 million for his signature five-and-a-half years ago, as reported by the Guardian.
Rodwell was nothing short of a disaster at City, however. And he has not been much better at Sunderland since joining the club in 2014 for £10 million, suffering a relentless series of injuries, a relegation to the Championship and over three years without tasting a Premier League win while included in the starting XI.
But if Rodgers can salvage Sinclair, can he repeat the trick with Rodwell?
