Scottish Premiership champions Celtic signed a man from Dundee in January and now Old Firm rivals Rangers are reportedly keen to do the same.

Just because a player is thriving at a lower league club, that does not mean he will be able to take a major step up in his stride.

Take Jack Hendry for instance. The young centre-back earned rave reviews for his performances at Dundee in the first half of this season but, since joining Celtic for £1.5 million at the end of a drawn-out transfer saga in the January transfer window, Hendry has been subjected to almost relentless scrutiny.

Expectations are far higher at Celtic and the tolerance for mistakes much, much lower. Hendry has found that out the hard way already, with some supporters claiming that he is simply not good enough for a club of Celtic’s stature.

So Rangers should have a glance across the city as they consider making a summer move for Glen Kamara.

According to the Express (13 May, back page), Rangers scouted the 22-year-old midfielder, who is valued at around £600,000, in Dundee’s clash with Partick Thistle on Saturday with an all-action midfielder understood to be a target at Ibrox this summer.

Kamara, since joining on a free from Arsenal, has been a revelation at Dens Park and looks set for bigger and better things, with all due respect to Neil McCann’s side.

But the same was said about Hendry and his move to Celtic has not exactly gone to plan so far. Not every case is the same of course and there is no reason to believe that Kamara would flop at Ibrox.

Although Rangers should remember that impressive performances at Dundee provide little indication of whether a player will thrive in a much bigger pond.
