Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers will take on Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord at Ibrox in Thursday’s Europa League clash.
Feyenoord manager Jaap Stam has handed Rangers a blow ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash at Ibrox, telling VTBL that star man Steven Berghuis is expected to feature in Glasgow despite concerns over his fitness.
Berghuis’s reputation might be tainted on British shores after that forgettable spell at Watford, where the Dutchman made just nine substitute appearances in Premier League action.
But since returning to Holland with Feyenoord, the former AZ Alkmaar playmaker has been in the form of his life.
Berghuis inspired Feyenoord to their only league title in the 21st century in 2017, won the Golden Boot 12 months later, and he’s certainly started the current campaign in top form. A skilful left winger who loves to cut inside on to his right foot, the 27-year-old has produced five goals and four assists in just eight games in all competitions.
So it is fair to say Rangers fans and players alike would have been hoping that a knee injury which saw Berghuis sit out the weekend’s clash with ADO Den Haag would also keep him on the sidelines at Ibrox.
No such luck.
“This game came too early for him, but I expect to have him fit again on Thursday,” said former Reading boss Stam.
